L'empereur Chūai (仲哀天皇, Chūai Tennō) est le quatorzième empereur du Japon à apparaître sur la traditionnelle liste des empereurs. Aucune date certaine ne pouvant lui être attribuée, il est considéré par les historiens comme un « empereur légendaire ». La tradition lui attribue cependant des dates de vie de 149 à 200 et situe son règne à partir de 192.

D'après le Kojiki et le Nihon shoki, il est le fils du prince Yamatotakeru et donc le petit-fils de l'empereur Keikō. Toujours selon le Kojiki il est le père de l'empereur Ōjin, dont l'existence est attestée par les archéologues, et sa légende a donc peut-être une origine historique, le personnage de Chūai lui-même ayant été intégré tardivement introduit dans la généalogie impériale.

Légende

D'après la légende, sa femme Jingū se retrouve possédée par des dieux inconnus qui promettent à Chūai de riches terres au-delà des mers. Celui-ci regarde vers la mer, mais ne voit rien et refuse de croire en la prophétie. Les dieux se fâchent alors, et lui déclarent qu'il mourrait et ne verrait jamais la terre promise, mais que le fils qu'attendait sa femme l'obtiendrait. La légende affirme alors que Chūai meurt peu après et que sa femme conquiert le pays en question, le royaume de Silla en Corée. Selon une version de la légende, le fils de Chūai naît trois ans après la mort de celui-ci, ce qui accrédite la thèse que les légendes l'entourant relèvent plus du mythe que de l'histoire.
